Strom Peterson and Jeff Scherrer, both running to represent the 21st District but in different positions, appeared to be heading for a spot on the November general election ballot.
District 21 covers portions of southwest Snohomish County and includes Mukilteo, portions of Edmonds and Everett and areas north of Lynnwood.

In initial returns Tuesday night, Peterson received 3,748 votes, or 28 percent of the vote in the 21st District Representative Position 1 race. Of his three Democratic opponents, Scott Whelpley of Mukilteo got 2,742 votes (20 percent), Edmonds resident Justin McMahon of Edmonds earned 1,999 votes (15 percent) and Dick McManus got 571 votes (4 percent). Allen McPheeters– the only Republican in the race — received 4,503 votes or 33 percent.
In the 21st District Representative Position 2 race, Scherrer — a Republican — received 4,771 votes (35 percent) while Lillian Ortiz-Self of Mukilteo — a Democrat — earned 7,498 votes (55 percent). Ortiz-Self was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Marko Liias — who now holds Paull Shin’s 21st District Senate seat following Shin’s retirement. Liias, a Democrat, received 56 percent of the initial tally (7,560 votes) compared to 44 percent (5,994 votes) that went to his Republican opponent, Dan Matthews.
In the 32nd District, which covers portions of southwest Snohomish County and includes Lynnwood and Woodway, and parts of Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace, incumbent State Sen. Maralyn Chase was comfortably ahead in early returns over her Democratic challenger Chris Eggen, leading 49 percent to 19 percent. Republican Robert Reedy of Mountlake Terrace received 31 percent of the vote.
In the 32nd District Representative Position 2 race, Incumbent Democrat Ruth Kagi was leading Edmonds resident and Republican Alvin Rutledge by a margin of 67 percent to 33 percent. Cindy Ryu was running unopposed for the 32nd District Position 1 seat.
In the U.S. District 2 Representative race, Democratic incumbent Rick Larsen garnered 54.23 percent of the vote (19,618), comfortably ahead of Republican B.J. Guillot (33.48 percent, 12,112) and Independent candidate Mike Lapointe (11.56 percent, 4,182).
