Retiring 21st District State Representative Mary Helen Roberts has endorsed Strom Peterson to succeed her in the Aug. 5 primary.

This is the statement Roberts released through Peterson’s campaign:

Representing the citizens of the 21st District in the Washington State Legislature has been an honor and a privilege. I have enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people over the ten years I was in the state House and was inspired by the challenges and successes faced by many of those I worked with along the way.

After I made the decision not to seek another term, I spoke to several people interested in succeeding me as 21st District Representative. Although I initially planned to remain neutral in the race, my conversation with Strom reminded me of our work together throughout his two terms as an Edmonds City Council Member, and how effective new legislators can be who have had local government experience. My conclusion was that Strom is the best choice for the citizens of the 21st LD, and I am enthusiastically endorsing his election.

Strom is a true civil servant, a man committed to giving his all, and doing his best for his constituents. He is willing and able to listen and collaborate with people from different backgrounds and opinions. I am not alone in my support of Strom Peterson; he has also earned endorsements from numerous elected officials and citizens including State Senators and Representatives from across the state, local Mayors and Council Members (Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mukilteo), as well as your firefighters, nurses, teachers, and police. The August primary is an important first step in electing Strom and I urge you to cast your ballot before the August 5th deadline.

Roberts has served for five terms as the State Representative of the 21st Legislative District, first elected in 2004. Currently, she serves as Vice Chair of the House Public Safety Committee. She announced in February 2014 that she would not seek another term. With multiple Democrats seeking her position, Representative Roberts made an official endorsement in the race:
